Gravesham Foodbank - Story so far!

Gravesham Foodbank

The Story So Far.....

DavidRemi - SmallBack in late 2010, Pastor David Idowu from the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) 'Life Start Connections' became aware of the Trussell Trust and their Foodbank initiative.  After investigating our nearest functioning Foodbanks, Ps David took the faith step to pay for the first stage of starting a Foodbank by purchasing the manual from Trussell.  Knowing that God is keen to bless us when we work in partnership, Ps David brought the project to the Exec of the Churches together in Gravesham (CTG) and offered us the opportunity to work in together to deliver this amazing project.

Very quickly the Foodbank project has gathered significant interest and support.  Several members of local churches and the CTG Exec have been up to the Orpington Foodbank to learn and gain experience in the successful launch and running of Foodbank.  At the start of Feb 2012 we held a public meeting for interested members of our various churches, the car park outside was stacked 4 or 5 cars deep and inside the hall was filled with about 70 people all interested to find out how Foodbank could work locally and how they might get involved.

The expressions of interest from this meeting have now being worked through as the organising team and everyone who expressed interest in being involved has been contacted to start to draw together the teams we will need to function.

Venues...

Much time has been spent looking for the best venue to operate the Foodbank from, looking at shop units, storage facilities, etc.  After seemingly little progress it was decided to just start with whatever facilites we could access and see where we went from there...  After all God provides!  So in Autumn 2012 2 sites (RCCG Life Start Connections on St. Clements Close and Gravesend Methodist Church on Milton Road) opened with limited storage.  Within weeks additional storage had come to light and by the end of 2012 we have added an extra site (St. Pauls URC on Singlewell Road) and also a proper storage facility.  God is Good!!!

Developments...

We are already seeing that there is a real need in our community, in just our first few months barely open we have fed over 1800 people, distributing over 15 tonnes of food!  In time we expect to operate more hours and possibly another site, however the current focus is to build up the teams and systems to ensure that this miracle is ready for significant growth.
